BACKGROUND

Falling under the “White, Non-Hispanic” category in the 2000 U.S. Census, the Slavic-American population has become an invisible minority, sublimated under traditional white ethnic groups.

Presently, little attention has been devoted to Eastern European Americans of Slavic descent, a diverse group of about nineteen million. For too long, we have gone unnoticed by society, politicians and governments, and only through a unified voice can we hope to enact change.

Only by creating an organization that unites this population by forming strategic inter-Slavic alliances will we ensure that our voice is heard.

We can raise awareness of our community and our relevant issues.  Only through cooperative action and inter-Slavic dialogue can we improve our visibility and solidify our place in the American cultural landscape.

The Slavic Heritage Coalition (SHC) will help Slavic organizations form partnerships with other Slavic organizations to work toward creating a more unified, just America.

The SHC’s goal is to explore the role of ethnic Slavic organizations in ensuring that all Americans are included in the political, economic and cultural fabric of the nation.

The SHC’s primary focus is the collection and dissemination of information regarding Slavic ethnic groups as a mechanism for mutual assistance and communication among these groups.

The SHC is conducting a survey to generate the recognition of a Slavic-American identity in the United States through micro-segmentation.

The survey will classify individuals with a heritage connection with Slavic countries, including Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine and assess Slavs’ attitudes toward relevant issues.

The Slavic Heritage Coalition was founded with the hope that, with greater recognition, we can make a greater change.

No longer will American Slavs' voices go unheard or unnoticed.  By strengthening the community, illuminating our rich history and enhancing our visibility, we can and will enable social reform.  Have your voice be heard! Register to join the Slavic Heritage Coalition today!
